The Jeffrey Springs trade involves the Tampa Bay Rays sending left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs, along with fellow lefty Jacob Lopez, to the Oakland Athletics. In return, the Rays received right-handed pitchers Joe Boyle and Jacob Watters, first baseman Will Simpson, and a 2025 Competitive Balance Round A pick. Springs, who had a standout 2022 season with a 2.46 ERA over 135 1/3 innings, signed a four-year, $31 million contract extension with the Rays in 2023 but was sidelined by Tommy John surgery. His acquisition by the A’s adds a seasoned arm to their rotation, aligning with their strategy to increase payroll and avoid grievances with the MLB Players Association.
