Munetaka Murakami, a standout third baseman from the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), has become a focal point of interest due to his exceptional performance and future MLB prospects. Murakami signed a three-year contract extension with the Swallows in December 2022, which stipulates that he will be posted for MLB teams after the 2025 season. His 2022 season was historic, where he hit 56 home runs, breaking Sadaharu Oh’s record for the most home runs by a Japanese-born player in a single season, thus cementing his reputation as one of the top hitters outside of MLB.
Frankie Montas, a right-handed pitcher, signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds in December 2023. After a tumultuous 2023 season with the New York Yankees, where he struggled with injuries including shoulder inflammation and subsequent surgery, Montas aimed to revitalize his career. His contract with the Reds is seen as a prove-it deal, offering him an opportunity to demonstrate his health and pitching prowess in a new environment. Montas, known for his high-velocity fastball and effective splitter, had previously shown promise with the Oakland Athletics, posting a 3.37 ERA over 127 innings in 2021. His signing with the Reds is both a strategic move for the team to bolster their rotation and a chance for Montas to reclaim his status as a top-tier starter.
Matthew Boyd, another left-handed pitcher, also signed with the Cleveland Guardians in December 2023 after a season where he was limited to just 15.1 innings due to injury. Boyd, who had Tommy John surgery in 2023, inked a one-year contract with the Guardians, which includes an option for the next year, indicating the team’s faith in his recovery and potential. Before his injury, Boyd was known for his strikeout ability, averaging over 9 strikeouts per 9 innings with the Detroit Tigers in previous years. His signing is part of Cleveland’s strategy to rebuild their pitching staff with experienced arms while managing financial risk, given Boyd’s history of injuries. This move could either prove beneficial if Boyd returns to form or serve as a low-risk, high-reward scenario for the Guardians.
Nolan Arenado has been linked to the Los Angeles Dodgers through persistent trade rumors, with speculation peaking around the MLB trade deadlines. His connections to the Dodgers are partly due to his Southern California upbringing and the potential of him waiving his no-trade clause to join his hometown team. These rumors gained additional traction with a cryptic Instagram post by Arenado where he used Kendrick Lamar’s song “Dodger Blue” as background music, hinting at his interest in playing for the Dodgers. Despite the song choice and the ongoing discussions, Arenado’s substantial contract through 2027 with the St. Louis Cardinals and the complexities of trade negotiations, including the Cardinals’ need for young pitching, make any deal challenging. However, the song choice has fueled fan speculation and discussions about a potential blockbuster move to bring Arenado to LA.
